Workers Outside of Work (Mothers)2018
Installation, 16mm film projected onto wall sized screens in small rooms.
Workers Outside of Work is an ongoing series that has several iterations all involving close listening experiences in small sectioned-off rooms with 16mm projections. This setting supports the inherent intimacy of the content. In total, I have made 3 installments.
It is a reflection of the reformist efforts pushing to the forefront of the contemporary labor movement. At its root, it echoes how essential it is to understand workers with the complex intersections of their many identities. Workers do not trade off the hats of their identity when they walk into the workplace and sport a solitary ‘worker hat’. They have many, many hats. If we want a more just working world we need to support whole identities, not just one slice. To help this process, or at the very least, encourage, it is critical to be able to see and hear workers outside of their work.
